One of my girls is toying with starting a new enterprise: ‘Dial a Granddaughter’.
During the week, she updated her phone. She gave her ‘old’ one to my mum who had been looking to update her truly old phone, after more than ten years, in order to get the Coronavirus app. My daughter spent a harrowing couple of hours in a Telstra outlet, trying to source a new SIM for my mum, apparently not a simple process! She watched as numerous elderly people came in on walkers and sticks battling internet issues, and phone troubles. Slow lines manned by few staff meant lots of waiting around. She came home traumatised by the knowledge of just how much many old people are struggling with the new technologies, upon which they must rely, and how many have no one to support them. Hence, her new idea.
After several trips, the SIM was finally sourced and the iPhone tutorial began! For a woman in her eighties, my mum is amazing and still eager to learn. She took handwritten notes along the way and graced me with her very first selfie (pictured). Later in the day, she even replied to one of my texts with an emoji… a Halloween pumpkin! What more could she say!?
Tutorial two will commence today and it warms my heart to think of my daughter helping my mum. This week, while we can't all simply ‘Dial a Granddaughter’, I am also asking God to help me see who needs me to be their granddaughter, and for the grace to love, as granddaughters do.
