Earlier, my husband asked me about the topic of my next blog. I was a little embarrassed to reply, “Leaves…it's about leaves”.
While perhaps it does sound a little mundane, to me, leaves are discussion worthy, and having just basked in another incredible Melbourne autumn, I feel it would be remiss of me, in a blog that is about beauty, not to talk about autumn leaves.
Emily Bronte wrote, “Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree”. I couldn't agree more.
From our back verandah, amongst the green, my eyes are drawn to brilliant flashes of autumn leaves; redder than red reds, oranger than orange oranges and yellower than yellow yellows. And with the light of the cool evening sun shining on them..pure magnificence!
To some, leaves are nothing but a nuisance. Our elderly Italian neighbours despaired upon the arrival of autumn and spent weeks armed with brooms and rakes daily gathering the “rubbish” that fell from their trees. And windy days, oh disaster!
For me, it's nothing to take an ‘out of the way’ car route, simply to glimpse avenues lined with magnificent autumn trees. This photo shows one of my favourite roads. Its autumn trees give it both a gorgeous canopy and carpet of colour. It's a struggle to keep my eyes on the road on that drive!
So, as winter takes hold, and the last few trees drop their leaves, a big shout out to you, dear Melbourne. You do leaves like no other city, and I love you for it!
