Beauty 365 … Stories of Love and Life for Everyday

Lock-down journey, Day 10...Torture time, choosing a family movie.

After dinner, Day 10, and we decide to have a break from the usual family board game to indulge in a family movie.

Picture the scene: all snuggled together on couches, arms linked, feet up, happily munching on popcorn, laughing, singing along, pulling tissues from boxes at the appropriate moments…ah, family goals.

Alas, that was not our scene.

Our intentions were good. We have been keeping TV viewing to a minimum and have really spent more time outside than in, so we thought it would be a fun change.

All were in favour of the idea, but from the chaos that ensued, you wouldn’t have known it.

“How about we watch….?”

“Nah, seen it a million times.”

“How about …?

“You’re kidding, I saw that, it was pathetic!”

“What about…?

“Way too violent!”

“And…?”

“That’s a chick flic!”

Fast forward  half an hour later, still no agreement and once again the kids have had to endure the usual parental lecture…”When we were young, watching a movie was a real family event. We had to wait til a movie came on the T.V. and if we were lucky, we got to record it on our video recorder. Those were the days!” Sigh.

Eventually, after various members threatening to go to bed, "In the Heart of the Sea"  made the grade. In summary, about Moby Dick. It appealed to the boys because there was plenty of action and adventure in it, the girls, well Chris Hemsworth starred, Father, because of interesting battle of leadership between the captain and first mate, and me, well  I was just happy because everyone else was happy.

My sense of humour and the realisation that in fact, it is not easy for 7 people ranging from 52 to 13 years of age to agree together, prevents me from making the moral of this story, “Do not have family movies”.

However I do think it helps to embrace that famous scout motto, “Be prepared”,  be prepared with a movie beforehand, then be prepared for World War Three!
