Aware of our impending return to Melbourne, day 16 saw us taking a long walk through the quiet, gravelly streets and on to the beach. I am always conscious of the size of our group, (both in stature and number!), and wish I could wear a T-shirt that explains us…”Sorry, but we are all just the one family!”
Putting this awkwardness aside, many of us in the group have begun to notice a change, something gently stirring, something new and fresh awakening in humanity. A new spark, a twinkle, that we hadn’t noticed before.
As humans, we let so much separate us. There is so much that categorises us, that makes us aware of our differences; different backgrounds, different religions, opposing political persuasions, stages of life etc.
This virus gives us, at least, something to share! It doesn’t differentiate, no human is left unaffected.
And on day 16, we sensed a freshness as we walked. From the lone woman walking her dog, to the tradies savoring a beer on their verandah, to kids riding by, to the older couple strolling slowly; from a safe distance, all of them smiled at us, offered greetings, a quick snatch of conversation, a twinkle in their eyes. And we enthusiastically reciprocated.
Are we all a bit less self-absorbed, a bit less hurried, a bit more interested, a bit more united in a common battle against this new enemy? Have you noticed it too?
I guess time will tell. I’m hopeful.
