“Turn off that television or you’ll get square eyes!!”
When I was a girl, this was one of my mum’s favourites. She would bring it out if we had been in front of the TV too long, or were simply sitting too close to the box.
Along the same lines as “Eat your crusts so your hair goes curly,” I had always presumed that the threat didn’t have any medical basis. Not anymore.
Holidays over, Day 27 was the first day of the school term, and our first full day of lock-down style remote learning. In our household, we currently have three university and two secondary school, students. My husband and I also work from home.
That meant six laptops and our home computer buzzing and, after a day in front of screens, it did seem to me that round eyes were morphing into square!
Our new routine will take a bit of getting used to, and I suppose some of the school subjects will be more suited to on-line learning than others.
The first double period of our youngest son was woodwork. Woodwork!!! Maybe he had to watch some on-line hammering!?
The Year 11 student had a double period of PE. Fifty toe touches at his desk!?
Difficult to tell if the girls were studying or sneaking in more episodes of The Crown! I suppose at least the The Crown has history covered!
I couldn’t have been happier with my work space; sitting with a laptop on our back veranda, overlooking the leafy park behind us. Such a wonderful spot to help the creative juices flow!
Square eyes aside, I am excited for this new remote learning chapter, and very grateful for the innovative educational institutions and the technology which make it possible.
