Years ago, my husband and I participated in a marriage enrichment program which gave some great advice about communication.
They suggested that by asking,”What was the highlight, and what was the lowlight of your day?”, even time-poor couples can still have a deep and meaningful exchange.
We have often asked each other this question, sometimes over the phone, while in countries on opposite sides of the world, but most often in bed last thing at night.
This question has also influenced our dinner conversation. Often, one of the kids will pipe up with.. “Guys, what was the best thing about your day?”
It’s beautiful, and often surprising to hear the responses. It’s been a powerful way of gaining insight into the minds of these unique and precious people with whom I’ve been gifted!
My response to that question is often something very simple, very ordinary, but somehow profoundly joyful!!
During the week, this was one of my favorite moments.(See photo)
Some of my kids and me, freezing and squashed on a bench, drinking coffees and eating hot jam doughnuts.
Exquisitely simple, exquisitely beautiful.
